Under general supervision, performs skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the City’s traffic control infrastructure, including traffic signals, roadway signs, school zone flashers, street lighting systems, and related electrical and mechanical equipment. This position supports safe and efficient transportation operations by ensuring traffic control devices are properly installed, maintained, and compliant with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and applicable standards.

Essential Functions:
  • Install, maintain, repair, and fabricate regulatory, warning, guide, and street name signs in accordance with MUTCD standards.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of traffic signals, school zone flashers, roadway lighting, wiring, conduits, and signal hardware.
  • Assist with the installation of new traffic signals and traffic control devices.
  • Fabricate signs, decals, vehicle graphics, and related materials using computerized sign-making equipment.
  • Install pavement markings, sign posts, barricades, traffic counters, and portable message boards.
  • Maintain safe work zones using appropriate traffic control devices and safety procedures.
  • Inspect assigned equipment and vehicles, perform routine preventive maintenance, and report repair needs.
  • Complete work orders, maintenance records, and other required documentation.
  • Participate in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Six (6) months of maintenance, construction, electrical, or electro-mechanical experience.
  • Basic knowledge of traffic signal systems, traffic signs, roadway lighting, or related infrastructure.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, follow written instructions, and safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and maintenance software.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Certifications & Licenses:
  • Valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain:
    • IMSA Level I Traffic Signal Technician Certification within 12 months of hire.
    • TEEX Work Zone Traffic Control Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must reside within one hour of the City of Rowlett to support emergency on-call response.

Physical Requirements
Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and around active traffic. Requires lifting up to 50 pounds, pushing up to 150 pounds, climbing ladders and lift equipment, operating aerial lift trucks, working at heights, distinguishing colors, and safely working around energized electrical equipment.
